West Ham United made an enquiry in the closing stages of the window and Villa were willing to sanction an exit for the right opportunity, but a shoulder problem sustained in training halted any move before the deadline, per Jacob Tanswell's account of Villa's business for The Athletic. No agreement was reached between the clubs, so this reads as an enquiry rather than a collapsed deal. Tanswell had reported on August 1st that he stayed in England rather than travelling on the Far East tour in order to explore options elsewhere; he started for the Villa XI at Shrewsbury that day and was denied by Sam Proctor after driving into the penalty area.
